Google may rewrite titles and descriptions, and mobile layouts differ. Everything runs in your browser.

Why titles and descriptions matter

Your title is the clickable headline in Google results, and the description is the text underneath. Neither guarantees rankings, but together they decide whether someone clicks your result or the one below it.

Google's own guidance recommends titles that are descriptive and concise, avoid keyword stuffing, and are unique for each page. Descriptions should summarise the page accurately.

How the checker measures length

Google says title links are truncated "as needed, typically to fit the device width" — so space matters more than character count. The checker estimates the width of your text using Arial font metrics, a close match for desktop search results, against commonly used limits:

  • Title: about 600 pixels at 20px
  • Description: about 920 pixels at 14px

Text beyond those widths is shown with "..." in the preview. These limits are approximations, and mobile results can differ.

Worked example

Title: Emergency Plumber in Austin | 24/7 Callouts | Smith Plumbing This fits within the width limit and puts the most important words first.

Too long: Smith Plumbing Company — Emergency Plumbing, Drain Cleaning, Water Heaters, Repiping and Leak Detection in Austin, Texas This will be cut off, and the location — often the most important word for local searches — is lost.

Writing tips

  • Put the main topic first, brand last.
  • Write a unique title for every page.
  • Use the description to answer "why click this?" — a benefit, a detail, a reason to trust you.
  • Avoid repeating the same keyword several times.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a meta title be?

Google truncates titles by pixel width rather than a fixed character count. Titles of roughly 50–60 characters usually fit on desktop, but wide letters like W and M take more space. The checker estimates the pixel width for you.

Does Google always use my meta description?

No. Google may show text from the page instead if it better matches the search. A clear, accurate description still improves the chances it's used.

Is the preview exact?

It's an estimate. Google's layout varies by device, and it can rewrite titles. Use the preview to catch obvious truncation, not as a pixel-perfect guarantee.
